UTS Volleybal Club FAQs
Q: What competitions are available
A: UTS compete in SVL (Sydney wide) and AVL (Nation wide) competitively,
Eastern and National university games, some Sydney Cups (one-weekend
tournaments), Good Neighbour (Canberra December) and also run a social
competition on Thursday nights
Q: Do I have to be a student to play?
A: No, you do not need to be a student to be part of the club and play,
except for university games.
Having said that, the club has a strong association to UTS university, and
as such, university students enjoy cheaper fees, and priority in some
aspects over non-students
Q: What level of volleyball does your club support?
A: For representative teams, you need to have played before. If you
think you have what it takes, email us and request to come to a training.
We will confirm a training time. At the end of the training session, the
coach will let you know if you made the cut, and which division you should
train with.
Q: I am a beginner, what are my options?
A: As a beginner, your best option is to gather some friend and enter a
team in the social competition. There are 4 divisions, so there will be
one suited to you. For enquiries, email socialcomp@utsvolleyball.com
Another good option for beginners is beach volleyball. You can play
amongst yourselves, or get some coaching from the good folk at
www.beachvolleyball.com.au
Q: I don't have a full team for Social Comp, what can I do?
A: Unfortunately, the social competition is based around gathering your
own team. You can try sending the social competition email a request for
a team, but your best bet is to gather a group of friends.
Q: How often do you train?
A: Honours teams train 1-3 times a week depending on the time of the
year. Lower division teams generally only train formally once a week.
Q: Can I get paid to play?
A: Volleyball is not an elite sport in Australia. The club is supported
by the players and the university. If you are a university student of
sufficient skill, you can apply for a sports scholarship through the
university, but apart from that, everybody pays their own way.
Q: I'm an international student... can I still play?
A: Of course!
Q:I want to play university games. What do I do
A: Send an email to contact(at)utsvolleyball(dot)com and I will forward
your request to the students arranging teams.
Q:How much does everything cost
A: Fees depend completely on the level of volleyball you will be playing,
and as such, can only be discussed once you are fitted into social comp or
a team.
Q:When does the season run?
A: SVL runs from ~March - September each year. AVL differs year to year,
but generally women play during the first half of the year, and men in the
second. Social Competions run each quarter. There is a break between
December and March where players generally rest and play beach volleyball
amongst themselves.
